Many of us have more than what we need in our day to day life. Stuff that we have accumulated over the years. Under beds, in the backs of wardrobes, in that cloakroom or perhaps under the stairs. Stuff we know do not want. Yes each time we set out on a cleaning and clearing mission we end up moving them from one place to another. Here are some tips I have used:
Ask yourself; when was the last time I used this?
If the answer is more than a year ago then it probably means you do not need it anymore.
Ask yourself; am I going to use this within the next few months?
If the answer is no then get rid of it. If you are not going to use it within that time it most likely means that you never will. Go on, get rid of it. I know you are probably thinking what if I need it and regret this. This might happen of course, but think of all the mess you are ending up with if you keep it just in case you might need it within the next year (notice the terms “in case” and “might”).
Put these items aside and now as yourself; can I give them to friends and family?
Think about it. If you give it to a friend or relative who is more likely to use it that you are then you have achieved your decluttering goal AND you know where it is if you ever want to borrow it for that odd job or occasion. Some might say it is win win.
What if I can’t give it away?
Let us say that you do not know of any other person who would take the stuff. In this case you can either recycle, donate or sell them. With online auctions becoming standard tools in most households you are bound to find someone who would buy them from you. If you do not want to go through that hassle of course there is always the high street charity shop that would take the items, provided it is something they can resell. Most charity shops accept all sorts of items, from furniture to radios. If all fails you alway have the option to call your local authority and ask about recycling. You can arrange for the stuff to be picked up from your house or you can drop off at a local recycling facility.
So there you go. Decluttering in a few steps.
